Hi Justin! My friend and I are going to snorkel here and we wanted to know since they have no life jackets, does the wet suit provide the flotation device in the wetsuit? She is wondering! She does swim however, she wants life jackets when they have said they do not allow life jackets. Someone said that the wetsuit is supposed to make you float? Thanks!!!
Really enjoyed your video! I used to snorkel there a lot, years ago. The "crackling" you hear in your video is from what I think is "pistol shrimp" and is very noticeably heard while you snorkel there. Great video. Thanks for posting.
Hi! Amazing video!! I'm going to San Diego with a friend, we wanted to snorkel there. We've never done this before, is it better to take tour? Looks expensive, or we can figure it out on our own? Could you please advise what is better? Where is it better to rent the suit and equipment? Or to take a tour? Any good guide for those who want to snorkel on their own?
Hope this advice isn't too late. Any of the local rental supply places in the area is good. Do the snorkeling on your own. Enter where Justin entered, at the Cove, and go for it. Going out to the right, follow the shoreline and you can snorkel under the large arch there and continuing to the right, along the shore are the sea caves. Great area. Enjoy.
Nice video., I grew up in La Jolla. The cove use to have 25-35 ft ft visibility...now you're lucky if there is 10 ft. and thank you for not harassing the seals while snorkeling... this is their habitat, not ours, we are simply visitors. YOu went on a really calm day...nice.
Hi! Me and my sis are wanting to go snorkeling at this place but we have no idea where this is located, do you have any idea where we can locate this in the map?? Thank you !!
Hi Justin! Your video is incredible! I just recently moved to SD and will be snorkeling in the cove often. I also filmed a video here, but my quality did not come out as well as yours! I am wondering what camera/settings you use as well as what you use to edit? I have a GoPro 7 and I just cant ever seem to get the video to look this crisp. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you:) Kaitlyn
I love this video! I’m looking to get into snorkeling, do you know where I can find a good wet suit at a reasonable price? And for recording do you just use your Go Pro on a stick? (Idk the term) lol
Any webpage report visibility at the Cove? You can call 619-221-8824 and get the SD Lifeguard recordings but it's hard to understand sometimes and they don't mention it right away.
I wore a full 3/2 mm wetsuit. It's warm enough for winter but not too hot during the summer! You may find it a little cold in the winter though so if you happen to have a thicker wetsuit than I would bring it.
Hi, I used a gopro hero 7 without the diving housing to shoot at 2.7k and 60 frames per second. I also used the wide camera setting and had stabilization on which helps alot.
Heading there in June this year. Can you just snorkel at this location on your own/without a guide? It's the Cove correct? And is the early am the calmest and least crowded?
Yes you can bring your own snorkel and walk in from the cove! The water tends to be calmer in morning and you won't have to deal with the crowds that visit here in the summer. Visibility can seem pretty random but just look for sunny weather, low wind, and check local surf reports on surfline to gauge what the surf will be like. Once you get there you can always ask the lifeguards about the conditions and the layout of the cove and surrounding caves that you can swim through during low tide. Hope you have fun!
Amazing snorkeling trip. Seems totally different then what you see in Hawaii. How cold is the water? Is a wetsuit required? It must be warmer than SF bay water.
Usually 65-72 in the warmer months so no need for a wetsuit! I filmed this in winter when the water was probably just below 60. For the conditions I would check surfline for the surf report at la jolla shores. If the surf is less than 2 feet you generally get good visibility at the cove.
@LBM_Playz It's the go pro hero 7 black edition. The stabilization is really great because I was moving around quite a lot and it still came out smooth.
What time of day did you go to get this calm water? I was at La Jolla Cove today at noon but the waves are too much
So amazing!
Hey great video! Could you tell me the specific location?

At what time did you go? Last time I was there the waves were wild & the place was crawling with tourists.
Thank you so much for sharing the video and tips!!! Can’t wait to visit!
Are those dolphins at the very beginning?

Yes, poor water doggos. They can't see as far now and people harass them...

Thank you Justin for the very nice video upload. I use to take my kids there to snorkel when they were tikes. The La Jolla cove is a magical place.

Justin MacRae Thank you, that’s good to know. Great video, BTW.
Heading there in August. Do I need a wetsuit?
Beautiful I want to film here with my mermaid tail!😍😁
I am planning on going there but do I have to bring my own snorkeling gear (suit, goggles, etc)?
Yes you can bring your own gear but there are also local shops that you can rent everything from. I would check groupon for good deals!
that is so cool
What recording setup did you use for this video? It was absolutely stunning. Thanks in advance.

Justin MacRae did you use a wet suit in the winter or was it not to bad?
Nate Robertson you need a wetsuit in winter there
We went in November and water was around the 50s we rented wet suits for like $11
